30th Anniversary

On July 2, 1996, the Six Nations Elected Council sanctioned the formation of the Six Nations Gaming Commission through Resolution 32 — signed by Chief Wellington Staats, and charged with a permanent mandate: to ensure all gaming on the territory is conducted with honesty, integrity, and a commitment to fair play.

This June, that work turns thirty. But 1996 is not where this story begins. Haudenosaunee gaming traditions have existed for centuries — thriving long before European arrival, long before the creation of modern provincial regulators. These were not casual pastimes. Games were understood as gifts from the Creator, carrying social, ceremonial, and spiritual significance that connected individuals to their clans, their communities, and the land. Six Nations Bingo has carried that legacy forward for over fifty years, evolving from Monday night sessions into a major regional operation. When the Commission was established in 1996, it placed formal governance around something that has always belonged here.

Three decades of continuous governance. Thirty years of licenses issued, standards enforced, and community interests protected — without interruption, on the strength of the Six Nations of the Grand River’s own inherent jurisdiction. The Commission has grown alongside the community it serves, and the work ahead is as compelling as the history behind it.

It is not a small thing — and we are planning a celebration worthy of the milestone. Details on our 30th anniversary event will be announced soon. Stay tuned.
